Ear Gun or Needle? Why Shouldn't You Get Your Ears Pierced at a Beauty Salon?

Many people begin their journey with piercings at a beauty salon or a jeweler’s. We hear the distinctive sound of the piercing gun, feel a prick, and it’s done. It seems quick, cheap, and less scary than the sight of a needle. However, in the world of professional piercing, using a piercing gun is considered a mistake. The difference between a piercing gun and a needle is the difference between tearing the body and a precise surgical procedure.

Here are 4 reasons why you should steer clear of piercing guns

1. Blunt Force vs. Surgical Incision

This is the most important point. The way the tool pierces the skin determines how long it will take for your piercing to heal and how easily it will heal.

🔍 Piercing Gun vs. Needle—How Do They Really Work?

Piercing gun: It uses the piercing stud itself—which has a blunt tip—to pierce the skin. It applies a lot of force, crushing and tearing the tissue to push the jewelry through to the other side. This is known as blunt force trauma. It causes more swelling, pain, and a risk of cartilage deformation—which is why you must never use a piercing gun on the nose or the upper part of the ear.

Needle: It is as sharp as a scalpel and hollow inside (cannula type). It does not tear the skin but precisely incises it, creating a perfect channel for the earring. The tissue heals faster, and, paradoxically, the pain is less because the procedure is instantaneous and smooth.

2. The Sterility Issue

A piercing gun is a reusable tool, usually made of plastic and metal. And this is where the problem begins.

⚠️ Health Warning

Plastic cannot be placed in an autoclave because it would melt. Wiping the gun down with an alcohol wipe does not kill bloodborne viruses (such as hepatitis B or C). When the gun is fired, microscopic particles of blood from the previous customer are released into the air and can settle on the device.

The needle piercing, however, is sterile, disposable, and opened right in front of you. After the procedure, it goes straight into the medical waste bin. Risk of infection = zero.

3. The Myth of the “Therapeutic Earring” and the “Butterfly” Clasp

Earrings inserted with a piercing gun are usually so-called “healing” studs. They have two major drawbacks that are rarely discussed:

Problem Why is this dangerous? Professional solution
“Butterfly” Clasp It fits tightly against the ear, preventing airflow and making it impossible to clean the wound. Lymph, blood, and dirt accumulate in it—a direct path to infection. Flat-base labret—easy to clean, doesn’t press against the ear.
A bar that’s too short A fresh piercing always swells. When the ear swells, a “butterfly” clasp can dig into the flesh, causing pain and requiring surgical intervention. A labret of the appropriate length—with room to accommodate swelling.

4. Material matters

Gun-style earrings are often made of low-quality metal alloys, grandly called “surgical steel” (which often contains nickel), or are merely gold-plated.

✅ Professional standard: G23 titanium

A professional piercer will fit you with a sterile G23 Titanium (Implant Grade Titanium) piercing. This material is fully biocompatible, non-allergenic, and actively accelerates healing. It is the same material used in medical implants.

Summary: Choose Wisely

The time and money you save with a piercing gun are only superficial. Longer healing times, the risk of granulation tissue, and infection are a price not worth paying. If you’re dreaming of a new piercing—go to a professional piercing studio.

✅ Remember these key rules:
  • A needle cuts precisely—a piercing gun tears the tissue with force
  • A plastic piercing gun cannot be sterilized in an autoclave
  • A “butterfly” piercing is a breeding ground for bacteria—a labret is a safe alternative
  • “Surgical steel” often contains nickel—choose G23 titanium
  • Under no circumstances should you use a piercing gun to pierce the nose or ear cartilage
  • A professional studio = a needle, an autoclave, and implant jewelry
