Do you have a fresh piercing and are planning a swimming pool, aquapark or a vacation with a jacuzzi? Below we explain when you can go to the swimming pool with a fresh piercing, how to protect the wound when exiting cannot be postponed, and what to do with the piercing immediately after leaving the water.
In short
- Fresh piercing and the pool: it's safest not to immerse the piercing until it's finished healing.
- Jacuzzi, lake, river, sea: avoid throughout the healing period - it's water that's harder to control than a swimming pool.
- Output cannot be translated: cover the piercing with a waterproof dressing, do not dive and shorten the time in the water.
- After leaving the water: rinse the piercing in the shower, wash with 0.9% physiological saline and dry with a sterile gauze.
- Earring: ASTM F136 titanium with internal thread, tightened before entering the water; circle only after healing.
- Pain, swelling and discharge increase after swimming: contact your piercer or doctor.
When can you go swimming with a fresh piercing?
No risk - only after healing is completed, i.e. when the piercing does not hurt, is not red and does not leak. How long it takes depends on the place: the earlobe heals in 2-4 months, a industrial and navel for up to 12 months. Check your piercing in the table (details in the guide how long it takes to heal piercing), and if you don't know what it's called exactly, check out piercing atlas.

| Piercing | Healing time | What does this mean for the pool? |

Healing times are approximate. Each person's body heals differently - the final word belongs to your piercer.
Why is a swimming pool harmful to a fresh piercing?
A fresh piercing is an open wound, and pool water is not sterile. Chlorine limits the growth of bacteria, but does not make the water sterile. Additionally, it dries and irritates the skin around the canal.
The second problem is long contact with moisture. Softened skin is more easily irritated, and a wet swimsuit, cap or towel rubs against the earring. Each such tug prolongs the healing process.
Jacuzzi, lake, sea - is it safer than a swimming pool?
NO. Warm water in the jacuzzi favors the growth of bacteria, and the lake and river are not treated at all. The sea is also not a good idea: salty sea water is not the same as the sterile 0.9% physiological saline that is used to wash the piercing. Avoid all these areas throughout the healing period.
Are you planning a holiday or vacation with a swimming pool? Schedule your piercing around your calendar. Ear cartilage takes 5-8 months to heal, and the navel takes 6-12 months, so autumn and winter are the best time for the piercing to be healed in summer.
How to keep it fresh piercing in front of the pool?
If going to the swimming pool cannot be postponed, cover the piercing with a waterproof dressing and limit the time in the water. The dressing reduces contact with water, but does not provide 100% tightness - it is an emergency plan, not consent to regular swimming.
- Wash and disinfect your hands. Only then touch the piercing area - it will be useful hand disinfectant.
- Check the earring. Tighten the ornament or ball so as not to lose it in the water.
- Dry your skin. The dressing will not stick tightly to wet skin.
- Apply a waterproof dressing. A transparent foil dressing from the pharmacy should cover the piercing with some skin around it.
- Reduce your time in the water. Don't dive, don't jump into the water and avoid the jacuzzi.
- Remove the dressing immediately after leaving. Moisture trapped under the foil is as harmful as water.
What to do with your piercing after getting out of the pool?
Immediately rinse the piercing with clean water in the shower, then wash it with 0.9% physiological saline and dry it thoroughly. The idea is to remove chlorinated water from the canal as quickly as possible.
- Rinse in the shower. Lukewarm, clean water, without soap, directly onto the wound.
- Rinse with saline. It is the most convenient physiological saline in ampoules - one sterile ampoule for one wash, easy to take in your bag to the swimming pool.
- Clean the area around the piercing. They are useful for dried secretions on a ball or decoration lint-free micro-applicators - they do not leave fibers like cotton buds.
- Dry with a sterile gauze. Sterile gauze compress instead of a towel from the swimming pool - the towel collects bacteria and can get caught on the earring.
- Don't leave wet clothes on. Especially around the belly button and nipples, change into dry clothes immediately.
You will find all these accessories in the category care, and gloves and disinfectants in the category hygiene.
Do not wash the piercing with alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or ointment "just in case". After swimming, the skin is already dry due to chlorine. Aggressive products only add irritation instead of helping.
What earring should you wear if you plan to go swimming?
For a fresh piercing, the best option is an ASTM F136 implant titanium earring with internal thread - regardless of the pool. Titanium is nickel-free and the smooth, internally threaded rod does not injure the canal during insertion. Earrings with external thread are not suitable for fresh piercing. 316L surgical steel contains nickel, so it is better to avoid it at the beginning.
- For the ear, nose and mouth: titanium labret with internally threaded ball or flat labret with flat zircon, which catches less on the cap. More designs in the category labret earrings.
- For eyebrows: titanium banana with internally threaded balls.
- Up to the navel: models from the category navel piercings - standard thickness is 1.6 mm.
- All titanium models: ASTM F136 titanium.
To start with, the earring should be 2-4 mm longer, because the piercing will swell - irritation after swimming may increase this swelling. The shorter rod is usually inserted after 4-8 weeks (tongue after 2-3 weeks). We explain how to choose the length and thickness in size guide.
Circle, e.g. titanium segment clicker, put them on only until the piercing is healed. When fresh, the wheel rotates in the channel and is easier to hook - also in water.
How can you tell if the pool has irritated the piercing?
Slight redness and dryness of the skin the day after swimming is usually an irritation that disappears after a few days of gentle treatment with physiological saline. What is disturbing is what is increasing instead of decreasing.
- Common irritation: slight erythema, itching, dry skin, clear or whitish discharge.
- Lump at the entrance of the canal: often the result of pressure and moving the earring. They help No-Pull Disc healing platesthat stabilize the piercing - consult their use with your piercer.
- Alarm signal: increasing pain and swelling, skin that is hot to the touch, yellow or green discharge, fever.
If symptoms worsen, go to a piercer or doctor and do not remove the piercing on your own. Without a piercing, the canal may close and the secretion has nowhere to drain.
The most common poolside mistakes with a fresh piercing
- "Chlorine will disinfect the wound" - chlorine does not make swimming pool water a conditioning agent, and it dries and irritates the skin.
- Removing the earring while swimming - the fresh canal narrows quickly, and re-insertion hurts the piercing.
- Bathing in the sea "for salt" - seawater is not sterile and will not replace 0.9% physiological saline.
- Sitting in wet clothes - at the navel and nipples, wet material rubs the earring for several hours.
- Toweling off the pool - collects bacteria and can get caught on the earring. A sterile gauze pad is better.
- The dressing is left on for the whole day - moisture trapped under the foil is as harmful as water.
Questions and answers
Can you go swimming after having your ear pierced?
After piercing the flap, it is best to wait until the end of healing, which is usually 2-4 months. ear cartilage (helix, tragus, rook) takes 5-8 months to heal, a industrial 9-12 months, so the period without a swimming pool is much longer there. If you must enter the water earlier, cover the piercing with a waterproof dressing and do not submerge your head.
How long should you wait to use the swimming pool after navel piercing?
The belly button usually takes 6-12 months to heal and it is best to avoid the pool until then. This is one of the most difficult piercings in this respect, because the swimsuit holds moisture and rubs the piercing. After each contact with water, wash your navel with physiological saline and immediately put on dry clothes.
Does chlorine in the swimming pool disinfect? piercing?
No. Chlorine limits the growth of bacteria in the water, but does not make the pool water sterile. It dries and irritates the skin around the wound, so after swimming the piercing should be rinsed and washed with physiological saline.
Does sea water help heal piercings?
NO. Seawater is not sterile and has a different salt concentration than the 0.9% physiological saline that is used to wash the piercing. Swimming in the sea carries similar risks to swimming in a lake, so it is best to avoid it during healing.
Can I take out my earring while swimming?
Don't do this on a fresh piercing. The canal begins to narrow after a short time, and reinserting the piercing hurts the healing skin. It is safer to leave the earring and protect it with a waterproof dressing.
What to do when piercing is it red and swollen after swimming?
Flush him with 0.9% saline, do not touch him or enter the water until he calms down. If pain, swelling or discharge increases, the skin becomes hot or you develop a fever, contact your piercer or doctor. Do not remove the earring on your own.
